Gov. Robert W. Furnas Museum

Experience Nebraska history.

The town home of the second elected governor of the State of Nebraska was sold by the Stilwell family to the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation. Gov. Furnas and his family lived there from 1878 after leaving the governorship until his death in 1905 and his interment in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Brownville.

The main level is a museum outlining Gov. Furnas’s life and career in Nebraska. It also showcases early agriculture in Nemaha County. The lower level is furnished in the style of the Victorian Period popular during the time he resided here. Victorian antiques were loaned by Carl and Jane Rohman. Periodic talks and demonstrations are held during the season.

Open to the public for special and holiday displays, this 1868 Italianate and Gothic Revival home reflects the typical expressions of the era in addition to serving as an illustrative documentation of historical activities and events related to Historic Brownville. The Gov. Furnas Home is located at 230 S. 6th Street. Open Thursday - Sunday from 1:00-4:00pm June - October. For tours, call or text 402-245-7879 or go to the Brownville Market.
